US Navy Yard New York
29th January 1829

Sir
When I last had the honor of calling on you, I solicited orders for my son, acting midshipman T. A. M. Craven, to the naval school at this yard, but the rule you had adopted prevented a compliance with my request. You were pleased however to say you would give him orders for active service. As the frigate Constellation and sloop of war Ontario are now preparing for sea, I beg leave to transmit his application and to respectfully request you will favor him with orders.

I have the honor to be
very respectfully sir,
your obedient servant,
Tunis Craven

The Honorable
John Branch
Secretary of the Navy
