Naval Receiving Ship Java
August 2d 1834

Sir
I respectfully request that I may be detached from the U.S.S. St Louis, having been upwards of three years and six or seven months of actual sea service; and now ask the favor of a release from duty, in order that I may improve myself in the theoretical study of my profession while detained here as witness.

I have the honor to be sir
your obedient servant,
Tunis A. M. Craven
Midshipman

To John Boyle, Esqr.
Acting Secretary of the Navy
Washington, D. C.
