John S. Brown - Landsman

John S. Brown was born circa 1824 in West Stockbridge, MA and enlisted on 5 February 1864 at the New York, NY Naval Rendezvous as a landsman for a 1 year enlistment[1].

Brown was attached to U.S.S. Chenango on 29 February 1864. Due to the Chenango's boiler explosion and subsequent temporary decommissioning on 21 April 1864, Barry was transferred to the U.S.S. Tecumseh.[2] He was reported lost with her during the Battle of Mobile Bay on 5 August 1864 as reported in Navy casualty lists.[3], [4].

He was approximately 40 years old and had been in the Navy for over 15 years.
