John J. Kirk - Landsman

John J. Kirk was born circa 1845 in Peru and enlisted on 11 June 1864 at the Philadelphia Naval Rendezvous as a Landsman for a 3 year enlistment[1].

Kirk was initially attached to the U.S.S. Vermont per the Philadelphia's muster roll and then transfered to the Philadelphia. At some point while both vessels were at Hampton Roads, Kirk was transfered to the Tecumseh.

Kirk is listed on his rendezvous index card as having died aboard the Tecumseh when she sank on 5 August 1864 during the Battle of Mobile Bay. He was approximately 19 years old and had been in the Navy for just under two months.
