William C. West - Coal Heaver

William C. West was circa 1827 in England and he enlisted on 2 March 1864 at the New York Naval Rendezvous as a Coal Heaver for a 1 year enlistment[1]. He was sent to the U.S.S. Tecumseh on 25 April 1864 [2] from the receiving ship U.S.S. North Carolina[3].

West was one of the survivors of the sinking of the Tecumseh on 5 August 1864. He was picked up from the water by Acting ENS Henry Clay Nields' cutter from the Metacomet [4].

Per his rendezvous index card, West was next attached to the U.S.S. Hartford and later the U.S.S. Monongahela. He was discharged from the Navy on 15 April 1865 at Boston. [2]
